Become a volunteer
Volunteers are essential to the operation of our shelter. The number of animals housed at our facility far exceed the capacity of our full time staff. Your volunteer service is needed and appreciated. We expect that volunteers can contribute a minimum of 50 hours per year. Volunteers are required to purchase a volunteer t-shirt ($7.00) and name badge ($7.00). We can find a job that satisfies your skills and your interests. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to work with the animals. Walkers are also required to have a specific type of leash, which can be purchased at the shelter for $10.
Cat Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to clean and socialize the cats. Volunteers should be able to commit 1 or more hours each week. Volunteers must attend one of the training sessions....look for training sessions to be scheduled soon.
Dog Walker Training
This is your opportunity to have fun with the dogs, get a lot of exercise, and benefit the 70+ dogs who need to be walked and socialized each day. Volunteers must attend all of the training sessions and are required to complete a total of 16 hours of training during the session. After graduation you can walk on any day of the week. We prefer volunteers who can regularly walk the same day(s) each week, but that is not required. People who don't want to handle the large dogs are welcomed to work with the small dogs. This is an important and difficult job, with a lot of responsibility, and volunteers are critically needed to make sure we walk every dog, every day . Please note that walking the big AND the small dogs requires good manual dexterity, upper body strength, and a fitness level that allows you to walk about 3 miles with ease. We have found that candidates with physical limitations or poor physical conditioning are unlikely to enjoy or be successful dog walking.
Pre- register for a session with Lori Lauer at llauer@ycspca.org. Attendence is limited to 25 people for each session. Registration fee is $25, which will provide attendees with a leash, T-shirt and name tag. Classes will fill quickly so sign up as soon as possible.
